Clinical research: trends and development policies in Greece
Clinical research is divided into interventional and non interventional studies that constitute the necessary steps to proving the desired beneficial effect and to record all the adverse effects of the administered medicine. Apart from the anticipated improvement of patients’ health, clinical research is associated with economic benefits. Conducting clinical research requires the involvement of all stakeholders. In this paper the various stakeholders are recorded and examined in order to analyze the characteristics which drive the implementation of clinical research and why they sometimes hinder it. It was concluded that achieving the enrollment goal and having properly trained and experienced principal investigators are the dominant factors associated with the implementation of clinical research. Simultaneously, an analysis of data on clinical trials from was conducted for a ten year period (01/01/2009 to 31/12/2018) regarding the 28 members of the European Union which was then used for comparison with Greece. For Greece it was calculated that over four out of ten (41.1%) clinical trials were terminated due to low recruitment. Also a disproportionate number of Phase I clinical trials was recorded for Greece (4%) compared to the EU average (13%). The analysis indicated that fewer clinical trials take place in Greece compared to other EU countries which have approximately the same population and even with less populated neighboring countries. An increasing trend in clinical research was found over the examined period with the results indicating the need for engaging all stakeholders as to increase the number of clinical trials in Greece.
