Summary:
The aim of this thesis is to examine some famous hymns included in choral songs of seven Greek tragedies (Aeschylus' Suppliants, vv. 1034-41, Sophocles' Antigone, vv. 781-800, and Trachiniae, vv. 497-530, Euripides' Hippolytus, vv. 525-63 and 1268-1281, Medea, vv. 627-41), Iphigeneia at Aulis, vv. 543-57, and Troades, vv. 840-59); these hymns are dedicated to Aphrodite and Eros. In many ways it is obvious that these choral songs are connected to the well-known Sappho’s Hymn to Aphrodite (1 V). The tragic Choruses through these songs cast their spells in order to subdue the magical power of love (thelxis).
