Quality of life for patients with esophageal cancer after minimally invasive techniques
Summary:
Esophageal cancer is a global problem with a constant increase in the incidence of the disease globally. Despite the advanced techniques in diagnosis and treatment, it is still accompanied by poor prognosis under five years. Survival rates range between 15% and 25%. The only treatment for localized esophageal cancer is a radical excision with adequate lymphadenectomy. In order to reduce post-operative morbidity and to achieve an increase in postoperative quality of life (QoL), minimally invasive surgical techniques have been introduced in the treatment of esophageal cancer. In the 1990s, the first minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) with thoracoscopy instead of the classical thoracotomy gained worldwide interest. In a series of studies carried out in specialized centers abroad, the short-term benefits of minimally invasive techniques, such as fewer post-operative complications, faster patient mobilization, less postoperative pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, decreased cost of hospitalization and shorter surgical time, less burden on the respiratory system.
However, there was no significant difference in oncologic outcome and long-term survival between the two surgical techniques.
