Internet behaviours and demographic variables correlating with life satisfaction of adolescents in Europe
Summary:
Life satisfaction in adolescence is a research topic attracting increasing interest in recent years, due to the multifaceted role that it seems to play in adolescent life. The goal of the present study is to examine the potential correlation of life satisfaction with specific internet behaviours of adolescents, including dysfunctional internet behaviour, social networking, online communication with strangers and meeting these people in the real world, as well as cyberbullying, gaming, and gambling. Moreover, the potential correlation of life satisfaction with a variety of demographic (personal / familial) features is investigated. The representative sample consisted of 11,934 adolescents, aged 14-17 years from seven European countries (EU NET ADB, a cross-sectional school-based survey). Our findings suggest that there is a correlation between life satisfaction and dysfunctional internet behaviour, online communication with strangers, cyberbullying victimization and cyberbullying perpetration. Additionally, there was correlation with some demographic variables, including gender, age, family structure, students’ academic performance and country of residence. The extensive discussion emphasises the need for conducting systematic similar research, with an updated design, since life satisfaction in adolescence comprises a valuable indicator of well-being and an axis for mapping out preventive and therapeutic interventions, as well as policy-making.
