Investigation of the vocational satisfaction of nurses in Greece
Summary:
Nursing is a demanding profession that needs healthy physical and mental health, as it plays a vital role in healthcare. Job satisfaction is a measure of employee satisfaction with their work. Nurses working in different hospitals (private / public) or clinics may have different levels of job satisfaction. Nurses' job satisfaction is an important issue in the nursing profession, with many factors influencing job satisfaction, such as workload, pay, respect, etc.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is the scientific evaluation of the level of professional satisfaction of the nursing staff of two large private hospitals in Athens.

Methodology: The study population N = 120 concerned the nursing staff (nurses / assistant nurses) of two large private hospitals in Athens. The data collection of the study took place over a period of two months (March - April 2020). Of the 150 questionnaires distributed to the nursing staff of the hospitals, 120 were returned completed (92% response rate). The data collection for the study was done by the researcher using a questionnaire consisting of two thematic sections. The first section concerns the demographic - social characteristics and the working status of the participants and the second section includes the questionnaire measuring the professional satisfaction of Professor Paul E. Spector (Job Satisfaction Survey - JSS). The SPSS statistical package, version 24 for Windows, was used for data analysis.

Results: The results of the research show that the majority of the study population were women at a rate of 92.5%, aged 35-39 years (36.67%). Factors that affect nurses' job satisfaction are salary, potential rewards, communication and interaction with colleagues, nature and workload, supervision and privileges (p-value = <0.05).

Conclusion: In the present study it was found that the professional satisfaction of the nurses of the two private hospitals is affected by eight of the nine factors, salary, privileges, potential rewards, communication, supervision, nature and workload and socializing with colleagues. In contrast, there is no correlation between the promotion factor and job satisfaction. In addition, the level of professional satisfaction of nurses differs between the two sexes and in different age groups.
