Maternal serum leptin, determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, as a biomarker of preeclampsia: Systematic review
Summary:
Background: Preeclampsia represents a mayor pregnancy complication, associated with high rates of perinatal morbidity. The aim of this systematic review is to accumulate current literature evidence in order to examine the pattern of serum leptin levels among pre-eclamptic women compared to healthy pregnant ones and access their potential efficacy in the prediction of the disease.
Method: Medline/Pubmed and Scopus databases were systematically searched. All case-control studies reporting serum leptin values in women with preeclampsia and normal pregnancy over 18 years old, determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), were included. Studies should have been written in English or Greek language.
Results: A total of 24 studies were included, comprising 2.023 pregnant women. Leptin was evaluated and its values were found to be significantly elevated in 1.049 pre-eclamptic cases compared to 974 healthy pregnant controls during all pregnancy trimesters, independently of disease onset and severity. Quality of evidence was evaluated to be high for serum leptin levels.
Conclusions: The existing evidence suggests that preeclampsia is linked to increased serum levels of leptin in all pregnancy trimesters and forms of the disease and may prove to be beneficial as a marker of the disease or its severity.
