The expression of antisocial behaviors in European adolescents. Results from the study EU-NET- ADB
Summary:
Antisocial behavior and juvenile delinquency have been increasingly prevalent among teenagers during the last years. Risk factors can be traced in personal traits, social environment including family, school, and the internet. The latter is the object of increased scientific interest. Recently the EU NET ABD study has investigated the correlation of the internet and externalizing behaviors of adolescence. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of the internet on antisocial behavior/juvenile delinquency in the context of the EU NET ABD study.
This is a literature study accompanied by statistical analysis of EU NET ABD study’s results. Available statistical data derive from a sample of Greek school students and the findings related the correlation of antisocial behavior/juvenile delinquency, internet and personal traits, gender, social environment are presented along with relevant literature findings in Europe.
The impact of the internet on antisocial behavior/juvenile delinquency of Greek and European adolescents follows common trends. Differences associated with familial bonds and Greek culture are pointed out.
Taking into account the increasing presence of the internet in the life of adolescents as well as the alarming evidence concerning antisocial behavior/delinquency among adolescents in Greece and in Europe, it is important to assess their intersection. Studying Greek adolescents in comparison with their EU peers is useful in the context of European integration. Future research ought to compare adequate results from other EU countries or focus on EU countries with marked cultural, financial and sociopolitical similarities to Greece.
