Summary:
The purpose of this search is the observation, study and analysis of the technical and tactical actions of the goalkeeper, with regards to his contribution to the offensive development of the team and with the ultimate goal of interpreting the new role that he possess in modern football. For a deeper understanding of this new role, appropriate conditions are created in order to improve the goalkeeper’s training, so that he can adapt to the new environment required by the modern football.
In order to produce the results, this research examined the knockout matches of the final phase of the World Cup in Russia that took place in the summer of 2018 and 798 goalkeeping actions were analyzed. The matches were monitored via video analysis using the bs player program, while the Microsoft Office Excel 2007 program, was selected to process the resulting data. Descriptive statistics indicators were used for statistical analysis (f, %f, etc.).
The most important variables analyzed, were the pressure exerted on the goalkeeper, the way he performed when he was under pressure, the type of tactics he used to deliver the ball, as well as the outcome of the receiver’s action.
The results of this study showed that the rate of pressure of the goalkeeper was 26.19%, while the type of pass that prevailed when the goalkeeper was under pressure was that of a long pass at a rate of 81%. The success of all the goalkeeper’s passes was 67.04%. However, studying the passes executed in open play, the success rate under pressure was 53%, against 85% without pressure.
This survey showed that the role of the goalkeeper has been evolving rapidly over the last twenty years. The analysis of the resulting data could be a guide for the design of the most appropriate training programs for the goalkeeper.
