Summary:
The object of this thesis is the poetry of Nikos Karoyzos during the first two post-war decades in Greece. Its main goal is the interpretative analysis of Karoyzos’ poetics and the detection of the interrelation between the thematic, morphological and pragmatic characteristics of his work and the social, historical and cultural conditions of life in Greece at that time. Methodologically, we follow the main analytical categories of the genre theory studies, trying at the same time to reconsider them in a solid historical framework. The first part of the thesis consists of the presentation of our theroretical tools, mainly the analysis of the basic characteristics of Elegy as a historical literary genre but also as a poetic “mode of feeling”, following the study of Fr. Schiller «On Naive and Sentimental Poetry». In the second part, we try through a close textual analysis of the poems of Nikos Karoyzos to detect the constitutive dialogue between his poetics and the Elegy as a literary genre and as a “mode of feeling”.
