"The Women of August Strindberg". The Position of Womαn as Reflected in the Works of the Swedish Playwright
Summary:
There is no doubt that women played a prominent role in both the life and work of August Strindberg. As Angelos Terzakis notes “woman has exert a strange and contradictory magnetic attraction in Strindberg's life”. He has been characterized as misogynist. Studying the works of the Swedish author, it is not difficult to understand his special relationship with women. The heroines of his works can often be sought in his turbulent and quirky life.
In the present study we tried to present the role and position of women, as reflected in the plays of August Strindberg. Before studying the plays of the Swedish author, we decided to dedicate some pages, considering both the social context of the time and some elements from the life of the author. More specifically, Strindberg's real relationship with women, the position of women in the society of the time, his view on the role of women, the influences he may have received on this issue, are the areas that were briefly examined before we begin to study the dramatic work of the author, the central core of our work.
The presentation of Strindberg's plays follows a chronological order. At first, we examine some of the author's so-called naturalistic works, while then our attention is focused on those works, which were written after the huge crisis he suffered. This section, with which we equip our study, is not accidental. In this way, we may be able to see if there is any change in the author's thinking regarding women; we will examine if there is any difference in the presentation of his heroines, which would signal a change in his perceptions of the issue we are analyzing.
