The political role of the oracles and the influence of the cities over them at the mainland Greece and the Asia Minor by the 7th century B.C. until the Median wars

The political role of the oracles and the influence of the city - states over them at the continental Greece and the Asia Minor by the 7th century B.C. until the Persian Wars is a controversial matter. The refereneces of the ancient authors about the prophecies of the oracles which concerned political issues, and as a result they influenced or they were supposed to influence political situations, is extremely doubtful if they correspond to oracles which had been delivered or if they reflect the actual content of oracles which had been delivered. Furthermore, it is extremely doubtful if the context in which they are placed is real or it is not clearly stated the role which the city - states of the period played, via their political leadership, in the formation of the prophecies' content, providing the impression that they were initiative verdicts of the oracles. The political issues of the Greek city - states which are associated with the oracles involve two general categories, the domestic and foreign issues. The domestic issues are divided in three sub - categories, kingship, tyranny and legislation and the external in two, war and colonisation, about which there is no reference in the present study. The oracle which is exclusively referred in the sources is that of Delphi, with only exception one instance which concerns the oracle of Didyma. As a result, the oracle of Delphi gained distinction as a panhellenic point of reference for political issues, which could not be arranged in any other way.
