The contribution of the exercise in dementia conditions
Summary:
During the last years, there has been an increase in the frequency of patients that suffer from dementia or mild cognitive impairment conditions. Ii is also a fact that there has been no effective treatment for dementia, while the drugs used to fight against the symptoms of the disease have numerous side effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the application of new, alternative, non-pharmacological interventions for the prevention and/or treatment of the disease. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the potentially beneficial effects of physical activity on the prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia in elderly patients. The results of the recent literature review showed that the majority of studies suggest that physical activity provides significant benefits in patients with dementia or any other form of cognitive impairment. Furthermore, physical exercise stabilizes cognitive functions and delays the onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms (e.g., apathy, confusion, depression etc). Physical exercise also plays an important role in improving the functional ability and the patient’s quality of life by decreasing the possibility of falls and increasing the patient’s independence in the activities of daily living. In conclusion, physical activity contributes to the prevention and non-pharmacological treatment of dementia as well as to the improvement of the patient’s quality of life. However, these beneficial effects vary depending on the characteristics of exercise (type, intensity, time and frequency) and the specific features of the disease.
