Homeric Influences in Aeschylus’ Fragmentary Plays: the ‘Odyssean’ Tetralogy
Summary:
The present thesis examines the influence exerted by the Homeric poems on the fragmentary 'Odyssean' tetralogy of Aeschylus. In the preceding introduction, the dramatist's contribution to the presentation of attic dramas is discussed, by his adopting a uniform thematic tetralogy (three tragedies dealing with consecutive stages of legendary myths and of one satyr play) and structurally grouped proposals of drama, whether survived or not. Subsequent to that an attempt is made to approach the multi-faceted relationship between Aeschylean poetry and epic.
The chapters which follow the present endeavour, pose a critical reflection of the basic inferences and views of fragments of the tragedies which constitute -according to most studies- a uniform thematic tetralogy: the Ghost – Raisers (Ψυχαγωγοί), Penelope (Πηνελόπη), and the Bone – Gatherers (Ὀστολόγοι) , as they do so with the satyr play, which acts as the fourth work of the tetralogy, Circe (Κίρκη).
On a subsequent level, an attempt is made to form a comparison with the epic genre (mainly the Odyssey) while concurrently a new organisational approach of dramatic material is proposed, as possible influences from further epic works, other than those of Homer are investigated.
