The contextual neologisms and their functions in the poetry of Odysseus Elytis from 1991 to 1998
Summary:
intrinsic creative aspect of the language, due to their ability to reflect the possible utilization of the expressive language potentials.
A basic tool for the development and expansion of the language itself through the creating of new linguistic forms, is the neology mechanism and what comes with it, the neologisms.
The term "neologism", refers to every novel word that is added in the vocabulary of a language, whether it is employed actively or passively by its users (Christoforidou, 2013:13).
Τhe «ad-hoc neologisms» that dominate the poetic language, are not included in the formal vocabulary of the language. Instead, they are generated in order to serve (poetry's) text needs, wherever they appear.
Being intimately linked to the context they are included, and due to their structural characteristics, ad-hoc neologisms activate multiple functions, which actively lead to the creation of a more sophisticated and complex, textual synthesis.
An interdependence, thus, is formed between the ad-hoc neologisms and the text: the text contributes to the emerge of the ad-hoc neologisms interpretation, while the neologisms contribute to strengthen the coherence of the text.
The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the ad-hoc neologisms functions in poetic texts, by taking Odysseus's Elytis modern poetic work under study.
