Summary:
The object of this paper is the action of a youth organization in the Greek-Italian war as depicted through the analysis of Georgia Mavragani’s Diary, a senior officer of the National Youth Organization of Kalamata (Greek: Εθνική Οργάνωση Νεολαίας, Ethnikí Orgánosis Neoléas, EON hereinafter). This Diary covers 92 days of a sixth-month period, from January 1st, 1941 to June 6th, 1941. The aim of this paper is to study Georgia Mavragani as an outstanding female personality of that period, the important role of women and youth, and the army of the rear in the Greek-Italian war. This research is also an attempt to explore how national identity is formed in a liminal period through the use of cultural memory, as well as how the institutions and collective ethos are developed within a youth organization, specifically that of EON. The object of the study of this paper is also the socialization of children and young people of both sexes within the aforementioned organization, the worship towards Ioannis Metaxas and the contribution of entertainment to raise the morale of the combatants and non-combatants. It is also provided an analysis of this Diary as a peculiar literary genre that moves between the boundaries of history, literature and the recording of everyday life and allows us to study history from a subjective point of view. All these are presented as a part of the broader historical and political context of Ioannis Metaxas’ governance.
