Summary:
This thesis was conducted in order to highlight the way in which the computer can be used in the teaching of Realistic Mathematics in Primary Education and in particular in the teaching of numbers 0-5 in 1st Grade. A teaching proposal is described which includes the use of software, the design of which is based on a scenario that is in line with the interests and daily life of students of this age and the "framework problems" according to the Realistic Mathematics Education of the Netherlands.
The first part of this thesis concerns Realistic Mathematics. Initially, there is a reference to the reforms of mathematical education from the beginning of 1950 onwards, while the history of Realistic Mathematical Education is also recorded. Furthermore, there is a presentation of some indicative studies that have been done both in Greece and abroad and concern the teaching and learning of mathematics in Primary Education using the computer. Then, there is an analysis of the theory of the specific proposal for teaching mathematics, which is described by three parameters: Van Hiele's levels, Freudenthal's didactic phenomenology and progressive mathematization. There is also a description of the role of teacher and ICT in Realistic Mathematical Education.
The second part focuses on a description of the traditional way of teaching the numbers 0-5 to primary school students following the instructions in the teacher's book, according to the Formal Program of Mathematics Studies. At the end of the section we present a proposal, a lesson plan, for teaching the numbers 0-5 to primary school students, using educational software and activities based on the theory of realistic mathematics.
The final part of this thesis, examines the advantages and the vulnerabilities of the proposed teaching plan, while there is a reference to the use of ICT in the learning process, especially in the field of mathematics.
