Spelling mistakes of children with dyslexia compared to typical children
Summary:
There is currently a growing concern from both the medical and educational research fields about the difficulties students face in learning how to read and how to write. Learning to write is supported by a number of properties and aspects of the written form that are part of the spelling system. This type of learning incorporates how to differentiate the formation of letters, the development of phonological awareness, the determination of the quantitative correspondence, the determination of the position of letters in a word, the understanding that the same letter can represent different sounds, and understands that the same sound can be represented by different letters. Spelling knowledge refers to the understanding of how letters are combined to form words, which are obtained through repeated exposure, the acquisition of phonological awareness and knowledge of the rules for the formation of the spelling mental dictionary. Dyslexia is a disorder that manifests itself as difficulty learning to read despite adequate education, adequate intelligence and sociocultural opportunities. Several studies have linked the existence of dyslexia to spelling problems. A significant number of studies have investigated spelling errors between students with typical language development and students with dyslexia. The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on whether elementary school students with dyslexia more often make spelling mistakes than their peers. The results of the literature review showed that the performance of children with dyslexia on spelling tests was significantly lower than that of their typical peers. More research is needed to investigate the phenomenon in Greece and the strategies that can be used to improve the spelling skills of students with dyslexia.
