Use of the institution of ‘dowry’ in the texts of the Attic forensic oratory and the New Comedy.
Summary:
The object of study of the present dissertation is the use of the institution of ‘dowry’ in the court rhetoric of the 5th and 4th BC. and in New Comedy. The dowry was a very important institution at the moral and social level, as it was considered by the majority of Athenians as an integral part of the guarantee and marriage in general. The majority of scholars have examined the ‘dowry’ from a legal, sociological and economic perspective. There is no study at all that focuses on how the institution of endowment is used and utilized rhetorically in both the rhetoric of the court and the comedies of Menander. This bibliographic "gap" seeks to fill this diplomacy, as much as possible.
The thesis is articulated in four parts. The first chapter describes the legal and social framework regarding the dowry, the importance it had in Athens in the classical era and the reasons for providing it, while, at the same time, the problems that have developed around the dowry and have occupied the research are mentioned until now. In the second chapter, the rhetorical use of the institution of ‘dowry’ in the legal speeches of Lysias, Demosthenes and Isaeus are examined. In the third chapter, the study focuses on six works by Menander. Finally, in the fourth chapter, the conclusions drawn from the study are formulated, comparatively examining the rhetorical use of dowry in court rhetoric and comedy and various parameters related to it, such as the size of the dowry, the "presence" of the legal for the framework dowry and the social practices associated with the institution in question. Three main factors have been taken into account in drawing the conclusions: judicial rhetoric and New Comedy are two completely different genres, with different aims and address a different audience.
