Abstract:
The work of Petros Bereketes –all-encompassing, as his name suggests- presents a wondrous balance between the developed old and the emerging new musical traditions, surely, something not uncustomary for the period during which the composer was active (end of 17th and beginning of 18th century). It also proves to be a “musical duality”, which is, unequivocally, especialy interesting. In the present paper I focus on two arrangements of the polyeleos Psalm 134 composed by Bereketes almost simultaneously in mode I and IV plagal of the Byzantine octoechos. From the morphological analysis of the two compositions it can be observed that, on the one hand, the mode IV plagal composition belongs to the old technique of polyeleos Psalm arrangements, as “the last echo” of the old musical tradition –and for this reason is most likely composed in the last mode of the octoechos- while, on the other hand, the first mode composition inaugurates a new, completely synoptic, morphological technique for the composition of polyeleoi (one which will soon dominate), and which Bereketes harmoniously proposes in his use of the mode I of Byzantine octoechos.
