Professional burnout syndrome of mental health professionals: the role of empathy, coping skills and social capital
Summary:
The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of professional burnout in mental health professionals and to investigate the possible correlations of factors of empathy, coping skills and social capital with professional burnout. In addition, an attempt is made to investigate the possible correlation of factors, such as socio-demographic characteristics and data on the occupational status of employees, with the development and manifestation of the phenomenon of burnout.
The scientific contribution of the present study is the investigation of the correlations of the above factors with burnout and the practical usefulness of the results for mental health professionals who are considered particularly vulnerable to work stress.
The sample of the study consisted of seventy eight (78) mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists / health care providers) who work in mental health institutions and structures in a public and / or private work environment. Mental health professionals participated in the research, by completing an electronic questionnaire, which was constructed after the onset of COVID-19 disease, due to the lack of physical presence and contact with institutions and structures. The variables under study were evaluated by the following research tools:
i. Socio-demographic and professional characteristics,
ii. Maslach Burnout Inventory, MBI, Maslach and Jackson, 1981,
iii. Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Mark Davis, 1980,
iv. COPE-Brief, Carver et al. 1997,
v. Social Capital Questionnaire,
vi. Index of Personal Economic Distress, Madianos et al. 2011.
In short, our sample shows moderate to marginally high burnout in the dimension of emotional exhaustion, high burnout value in the dimension of depersonalization, and moderate burnout in the dimension of personal achievement. Regarding empathy, it was observed that emotional exhaustion is negatively correlated only with personal stress. Personal achievement is positively correlated with all dimensions of empathy, fantasy, empathic concern, perspective taking and negatively with personal stress. Finally, depersonalization is negatively correlated with the dimensions of empathic concern and perspective taking and positively with personal stress. Statistically significant differences are found in sick leave days with the dimensions of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, marital status with the dimension of personal achievement and working hours and age with the dimension of depersonalization.
In terms of psychological skills, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are positively correlated only with the avoidant dimension, while personal achievement is positively correlated with the positive approach and religion dimension. Regarding social capital, the dimension of the scale of social support is negatively correlated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while it is positively correlated with personal achievement. In addition, there is a statistically significant positive correlation between interpersonal trust and personal achievement, while there is a negative correlation between the index of personal economic distress and personal achievement.
