About the implementation of socio-scientific issues in teaching second grade high school Chemistry: Teachers' perceptions and training
Summary:
The objective of this research is the creation of an educational material to explore the perceptions of Secondary Education teachers about teaching Chemistry using the Socio-Scientific approach and their intentions in implementing it. Moreover, the aim of this material is to train and inform teachers about this innovative educational method.
For this purpose, we designed an interview questionnaire consisting of 18 Questions, divided in 6 Question Sections. The educational material is in the form of 41 power point slides, in relation to the interview questions. In addition, we created an indicative two-hour Educational Intervention, with a socio-scientific orientation in the subject of Chemistry in the second grade of greek high school and more specifically in the Chapter: ‘Alcohols-Phenols’ of the school curriculum, which is included in the educational material.
Research results have highlighted the lack of training of teachers of Natural Sciences in Greece, with regard to components of learning and teaching. The interview questions are accompanied by the educational material which emphasizes, among other things, problematic issues related to current teaching methods as well as examples of socio-scientific oriented teaching, which have the potential to aid in the rehabilitation of these issues. Finally, we found that the two-hour Educational Intervention on Ethanol, complements teachers' training, by offering a viable example of the application of this approach to the teaching of Chemistry. The implementation of the Educational Proposal clarified the key points of the desired learning environment achieved by utilizing a Socio-Scientific approach.
