An exploration of the relationship between friendship, loneliness and resilience in high school students
Summary:
Interpersonal networks play a critical role in facilitating psychosocial adolescents’ psychosocial development and mental health. The current study examined the associations among the concepts of friendship, loneliness and resilience during the adolescence. The sample of the study was 686 high school students. Participants completed self-referral questionnaires of the quality of their friendships (Mendelson & Aboud, 2014), loneliness (Russell, 1996) and resilience (Neil & Dias, 2001). The results of the present study indicated the association between quality of friendship, loneliness and resilience. This study showed also the predictive role of resilience, loneliness and gender in quality of friendship as well as gender differences in the levels of quality of friendship and resilience. The findings highlight the importance of friendship and resilience in adolescents’ optimum psychosocial adjustment as well as the need for further research to study other factors which predict the quality of friendship.
