Translated title:
The prison overcrowding and the ways of dealing with the problem
Summary:
The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine the phenomenon of prison overcrowding. Initially, an attempt to clearly define and explain the issue is made (conceptual approach). A presentation of the size and dimensions of the previously mentioned problem follows, through international, European and Greek statistical data and comparisons between them. Subsequently, the causes of the problem are investigated and analysed, and a wide range of its consequences is presented. Finally, possible ways of addressing the problem in question are discussed, namely, the elimination of the factors that led to it (causative factors). When exploring each of the previously mentioned issues, emphasis is placed on highlighting the Greek aspects of the phenomenon. Starting with an account of the past and present state of prisons, as well as the measures taken/implemented by correctional authorities over the years in order to deal with this intractable phenomenon, the study ends with a reference to the latest developments and the impact of the Covid19 pandemic that did not leave prisons unaffected either.
