Summary:
The present pilot qualitative research aimed to study the experience of homosexual men participating in chemsex activities, through the lens of the ritualistic nature that drug use and sexual intrecourse are embeded with into them, as well as the possible prospect for disassociation from those practices. The sample consisted of five adult (26-44 years old) middle-classed homosexual men who had taken part to chemsex intercourses. Having safeguarded the ethical prerequisites, the participants constituted the focus group of the present study, from the conversations of which the collective narratives derived. Those narratives were analysed according to Interpreteive Phenomenological Analysis's guidelines and were reflectively enriched with a psychoanalytic approach. The hermeneutic analysis highlighed the multidimensional role that drugs and their use signify for the participants, both intrapsychically and interpersonally. The ritualistic manner that regulates both the drug use and the sex act during the chemsex activities seemed to shape (but also impose) a sense of belonging for the participants. At the same time, the emerged fetishized dimension given to a number of practices met into the chemsex sphere (drugs and their use, pornography, unprotected sex) appeared to act in a double way; partly as an answer to the secretive contemporary social imperative/ dictate for renunciation of the ellipse, and partly as a mediate to the relationship-encounter with the Other. Lastly, the participants' involvement in chemsex activities seemingly arised the complex figures of the identity they end up with (drug user, junkie, homosexual), through which partly they repeate or resist against what always slips out of the subject's inscription to sexuality.
