Symphonie Fantastique: Yannis Ritsos' Fourth Dimension and its Musical Structure
Summary:
The aim of this essay will be to point out certain aspects of musical structure found in the works that comprise Yannis Ritsos’ Fourth Dimension, a book of poems first published in 1972. According to our hypothesis, the form and subject matter of these remarkable works of literary art can be thought of as dependent to a specific creative procedure, comparable to that of musical composition. As we will be trying to show in the course of this dissertation, each poem, as well as the book as a whole, is full of complex musical interconnections, mainly based on the effect of repetition and, more specifically, the recurrence of words or groups of words and concepts. Even though this has been highlighted by critics in the past as a notable characteristic of these particular works, no study has yet treated the subject sufficiently and with this thesis we are, thus, hoping to fill this gap, while also proposing an interdisciplinary, comparative view of poetry as related to music.
