Comparative study of the cost of chemotherapy regimens for breast and pancreatic cancer in two different time periods (before and after EOPPY) at the Hippocration General Hospital of Athens
Summary:
This study reports on the basics of breast and pancreatic cancer, epidemiological data, therapeutic approach to surgery and chemotherapy, and then analyzes and compares the cost of chemotherapeutic drugs for these two diseases of two separate years at Hippocration hospital of Athens. The years when the cost of chemotherapies for breast and pancreatic cancer are compared are 2007 and 2016. The purpose of this comparative study is to highlight differences in the funding of the hospital, so it compares a year before the financial crisis and a year within this crisis. The results show an increase in the hospital's budget in the midst of the financial crisis, due to its increased needs and a stable budget from the hospital's pharmacy. Especially in chemotherapy for breast cancer the comparative study proves in 2016 a reduction in the total cost of a patient receiving chemotherapy, a reduction in the total cost of chemotherapy, a small reduction in the number of patients who receive chemotherapy and a fixed average number of treatments. The average age is decreasing in breast cancer chemotherapy these two comparable years. Remarkable results are found in the chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer with a great reduction of the total cost of the patient receiving chemotherapy and the total cost of chemotherapy for the year 2016. In contrast, the number of patients who receive chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer is increasing. Additionally, the percentage of women, the average age of chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer and the average number of treatments is increasing, too.
