Digitization of a wider area of Midea Argolis with the use Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Summary:
This work is part of an integrated effort to study the area of the archaeological citadel
of Medea, the Prefecture of Argolida, and the wider region, combining two sciences,
geology with archaeology. The digitization of geological formations was based on the
geological maps of igme (Nafplio leaf) in combination with the neotectonic map
(Korinth leaf), which exist in proportional form. The final digitization was done on
the geological map sheet Nafplio, with the help of the ArcGis Geographical
Information System. Due to the heterogeneity in their construction, both at different
time periods, as well as by different researchers and for different study purposes, it
was considered imperative to reprocess it for the creation of a single digital geological
map with the most nomenclature of geotectonic modules. Using the Geographical
Information System, the geotectonic modules were distinguished by the formations
and then grouped and captured in color, thus creating an enriched database, which can
be further processed. At the same time, the geomorphology of the region was studied,
through the digitization of the elevation diagrams. The digitization of the balances
linked to the archaeological findings helped to further draw conclusions about the
location of the Acropolis in this area. Finally, a new palette of symbols was created
for each geological formation (geological map sheet Nafplio) but coloring for each
balance (elevation diagrams with codes: 6386-5R and 6386-3R), so that it can be used
as such by researchers – scholars.
