Pulmonary embolism (PE) in a large hospital in Attica

Pulmonary embolism is a serious, potentially fatal condition, in which an
embolism-thrombus usually originating from the deep vein system of legs blocks
one or more branches of the pulmonary network. This has a major impact on
blood flow and right ventricular pressure.
The severity of pulmonary embolism depends on blocking level, the size of
embolism and the secondary blocking effects. Thus, pulmonary embolism is
categorized into acute small, acute massive, subaccute massive and chronic
thromboembolism.
Pulmonary embolism is a common disease and is characterized by high
heterogeneity of both clinical symptoms and predisposition factors. Clinical
manifestations of patients vary from dyspnoea and cough to haemoptysis. Great
heterogeneity also characterizes genetic and acquired risk factors.
Because of the above mentioned heterogeneity, the diagnosis of disease becomes
difficult. This is the reason why many techniques have been developed, however
with no accurate results. Diagnostic methods are applied combined with indexes
which evaluate the possibility of pulmonary embolism occurrence.
Finally, an accurate diagnosis is critical as it is the basis of the most appropriate
treatment such as anticoagulants, thrombolysis or surgery.
