The relationship between executive function and depression and despair: a survey of depressed patients without attempted suicide - witnesses
Summary:
Depression is an emotional disorder with a significant impact on the general population, amounting to 20%. In addition to emotion, it affects the patient's overall functionality, such as memory, concentration, impulse control, and cognitive abilities. A demographic questionnaire, the Beck Depression Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Executive Function Disorder Questionnaire were administered to a total sample of 139 individuals with a mean age of 43.8 years (SD 14.2), consisting of patients from the Psychiatric Clinic of the General Hospital of Nice and controls. The statistical analysis was performed with the program IBM SPSS 25.0. The correlation of the Scales and the basic characteristics separately in each group was evaluated through rho-Spearman and through the x2 method was compared the frequency distributions in the two groups in the symptoms of Depression and Hopelessness. An acceptable significance level of 0.05 was set. Patients had a mean of 12 years (SD 4.0) of education, while controls had 15.1 years (SD 2.9) at a level of p <0.001. A moderate positive correlation was observed between the hopelessness and depression scales (rho 0.585). Patients scored a mean 23.1 in Beck Depression Scale and the controls 8.0 respectively, a statistically significant difference. Patients scored a mean of 14.0 on the Beck Hopelessness Scale and controls 3.6. respectively, a statistically significant difference. There was also a significant statistically difference in the scale of executive disorders syndrome, in which patients’ score was 32.7 and controls’ 19.2. Further research is considered useful to enhance the existing literature and generalize the above results.
