The Oud: Historical and Ethnomusicological Dimensions
Summary:
The dissertation entitled "The Οud: Historical and Ethnomusicological Dimensions" was prepared within the undergraduate course of the Department of Music Studies of EKPA. Main theme of the dissertation is the musical instrument Oud, a form of lute used as a folk instrument in certain areas of Northern Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia.
The paper, based on the methodology of Historical and Systematic Ethnomusicology, can be divided into two central axes. On the one hand, the historical-geographical origin and course of the musical instrument are investigated, from the primitive hunting bow to the modern Oud and its individual forms. On the other hand, the modern practice of the musical instrument is studied, through the analysis of the various performing and expressive techniques that are considered as a tradition of its performance. For the needs of this study, three improvisations (Taksim) by different performers of different geographical origins were recorded in a musical score of western notation.
The dissertation focuses on the existence of the Oud in the region of Greece. Sometimes the instrument is approached historically and geographically as a cultural asset, thus inserting a cultural look into the narrative. Regarding the systematic approach, the paper attempts to create a dialogue between the different "styles" of playing the instrument, which vary from region to region. The aim of this dialogue is, on the one hand, to clarify and discuss the differences of the local musical idioms related to the Oud, and on the other hand, to emphasize their uniformity, so that the adaptability and timelessness of the instrument emerge.
