Hybrid techniques in the creation of soundtracks in short fiction films: The film 'Chopper'
Summary:
This paper is mainly highlighting the practices and techniques in the creation of film music resulting from the theoretical discourse and the revolution brought by digital technology.
The first three chapters concern the theoretical part of the work. In the first chapter, through a historical retrospect, the relationship between music and moving picture is clarified and the stages of their development are presented, thus showing their direct connection with the technological evolution.
Subsequently, in the second chapter, the multidimensional nature of film music is analyzed as it emerges from the theoretical discourse. Specifically, the main points are as follows: 1) The musical and visual structural elements of cinematic music. 2) The three basic functions of music in films – the Formal, Narrative, and Emotional function – that derive from numerous theoretical disciplines (musicology, film studies, sociology, psychology).
In the third chapter, a categorization of the basic practices and techniques in the approach of film scoring creation is made and a particular emphasis is given to the new hybrid techniques that result from the development of 21st century’s digital applications.
The following chapters cover the practical part of the thesis. In the fourth chapter, the methodology that was followed in the creative process of the music composition of the short film "Chopper (2019)" using modern practices and techniques is presented and described in detail.
In the fifth chapter, the architectural structure of the composition is analyzed. Finally, the conclusions, the epilogue, and the bibliographic sources are presented.
