The neutrofil-lympocyte ratio (NLR) as a prognostic outcome indicator in a group of C.O.P.D patients hospitalized for an infectious exacerbation
Summary:
Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) comprises a serious public health, being a gradually evolving inflammatory disease of the airways, as a result of a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors.

Aim: Evaluation of individual prognostic clinical or biochemical factors and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR) ratio for the length of stay in the hospital in a group of COPD patients hospitalized for an infectious exacerbation.

Materials & Methods: The current prospective study included 166 patients hospitalized with an infectious exacerbation of COPD. Demografic data, markers of inflammation, severity of the disease and length of stay during hospitalization were recorded.

Results: A statistically significant association was recorded between the duration of hospitalization and the stage of COPD, according to GOLD. A value of 4,98 was found as the optimum discriminatory value of NLR, for patients hospitalized for more than 11 days (sensitivity 30%, specificity 74%). Furthermore, statistically significant associations were found between NLR C-reactive protein (CRP) and the number of white blood cells.
