Τhe knowledge and perceptions of elementary education students on climate change
Summary:
In recent years there has been a strong interest in surveying and understanding students' knowledge, beliefs and perceptions of global environmental issues, such as climate change and other related problems and phenomena, such as the greenhouse effect and global warming. Climate change is one of the most serious scientific, social, educational and international issues that humanity faces today and education needs to incorporate it in all curricula and search for new approaches to better support young people in dealing with it. This study starts from a brief review of the international literature on students' perceptions, attitudes, knowledge and beliefs about climate change. Based on this, a research was designed to examine the knowledge and perceptions of elementary education students on climate change, as well as whether there is any difference between students who have attended environmental education programs and those who have not. The data collection instrument employed was a questionnaire with closed-ended and open-ended questions. The research sample consisted of a total of 300 students from four elementary schools in the wider Athens area. The study results showed that participants had a fuller and better perception of climate change compared to students in previous research, although misconceptions about the causes still persist. Moreover, students who have participated in environmental education programs seem to be better informed about climate change.
