The representation of the woman-perpetrator in the news: The study of the case of abduction of a ten-year-old and the attack with sulfuric acid
Summary:
This thesis studies the way in which the representation of the woman-perpetrator is taking place in the news, through the quantitative analysis of the content of three Greek websites. The starting point for conducting this research were two crime cases, which took place in May and June 2020 in Athens and Thessaloniki respectively, with two women alleged as perpetrators. The first case involved a sulfuric acid attack against an adult woman and the second one an abduction of a minor girl. The aim of this study is to examine, record, present as well as further deepen on the discussion about the representation of the woman-perpetrator, as a timeless phenomenon both in journalism and popular culture. Thematic analysis and quantitative content analysis were chosen as methods for the analysis of the test sample. The results of the survey showed numerical confirmation for a certain number of working cases. Limitations and weaknesses in the methodological field lead to suggestions for further future research.
