Summary:
This thesis concerns Action Research as a collaborative practice and its contribution to professional learning and development of teachers in the school environment as a Teacher Learning Community.
The aim of this paper is to study the perceptions of the teachers who work in Primary Education regarding the possibility of implementing Action Research practices in schools, either individually or in groups, and its contribution to professional learning and development of teachers.
This study is made up of two parts.
In the first part, the focus is on Action Research as a mainly collaborative research which presupposes the active participation of those involved in the field of research. The entire process is presented, as well as the implementation stages, its distinctive features, the forms of action research, its benefits and challenges.
Next, the meaning of professional development of teachers is analysed as well as its connection to Action Research with regard to collaborative practices at schools which also function as Professional Learning Communities. At the same time, the features of such schools which promote the professional development of teachers are introduced. In the bibliographical citation there is a brief survey of empirical research in Greece and abroad concerning the implementation of Action Research as a collaborative practice and the professional development of teachers.
In the second part, the results of the quantitative sampling, which was carried out in public schools of Primary Education of Atttika, are presented. The research focused on the perceptions of teachers regarding the introduction and implementation of Action Research and to which extent this contributes to upgrading the quality of their professional development. Further points of investigation are the predisposition of teachers and the role of Principals in successfully implementing Action Research in schools.
