"The Bow and The Lyre" : Rhetoric and Imagery in The Odes by Andreas Kalvos
Summary:
The present treatise is an attempt to offer insights into the multifarious imagery of Andreas Kalvos’s lyrical Odes through the aesthetic framework of ‘iconotropism’ and thus to clarify its various rhetorical implications. In the first part of our treatise, the iconotropic tradition of literary ‘pictorialism’, after the horatian simile ‘ut pictura poesis’, is examined in particular within the cultural context of European Neoclassicism. Futhermore, literary aesthetics of neoclassical pictorialism, mainly shaped by the notion of enargeia, is elucidated and elaborated in Kalvos’s poetic doctrine. Moreover, literary and rhetorical devices employed in the Odes are outlined through the prism of neoclassical pictorialism and lyrical enunciation is traced as well. In the second part, thorough literary analysis and critical rhetorical approach throughout the corpus of the Odes is performed, based on the theoretical background deployed in the first part of our study.
