Distribution of EU Defence Expenditure as Geopolitical Factor of Power Projection in the Geographical Complex of Europe – Africa
Summary:
The aim of this thesis is the study of economic data of the European Union that are used for Defence purposes in the light of Systemic Geopolitical Analysis, to highlight the role of the EU as a Systemic Actor in the System under study (Europe - Africa), in contrast to Supra-Systemic Actors, such as the United States of America and China. The primary reason for selecting the specific Geographical System/Complex is based on the extensive activity developed by the EU over the last decade and has intensified on the redistribution of power in North Africa, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa. These are areas, where the EU has shown interest and has organized missions of both military and advisory nature. In this context, the financing mechanisms of the missions, the current operations in the respective Sub-Systems and their impact on security and strategy are studied too. At the same time, special mention is made of the research and development sectors (R&D) regarding the EU Defence industry and how this progress is transformed in the operations field. In this thesis, the Geopolitical Pillars of Defense/Security and Economy are examined for the action analysis and the operation of the Geopolitical Factor, based on which geopolitical indices will be used (e.g., defence expenditure in the European Union).
