The impact of occupational environment on asthma

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, usually characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways and is the result of an interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Occupational asthma belongs to the category of work-related asthma and is due to factors and conditions that prevail in the occupational environment. It is one of the most common occupational respiratory diseases, affecting approximately 16% of adults with late-onset asthma. The pathogenesis of the disease involves either immunological (requires a long period of exposure to the causative agent in order the worker to be sensitized) or non-immunological mechanisms (does not require a long period of exposure, occurs after accidental exposure to high concentrations of irritants in the workplace). The effects are significant both on patients' health and at the socio-economic level. The treatment of the disease includes avoiding or limiting exposure to the causative agent and proper treatment with the appropriate medication. Early avoidance of exposure to the culprit agent is the cornerstone of treatment and is associated with good prognosis, which demonstrates the importance of early diagnosis.
