Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the importance of balance for the sport of artistic gymnastics, through the study of foreign and Greek literature. In addition, the scores of the athletes who qualified for the final of the balance beam of three recent, official competitions were analyzed, with special emphasis on balance errors. Through the analysis of the literature, the characteristics of the sport of artistic gymnastics, the way of evaluating the technical elements and the peculiarities of the balance beam were identified, to highlight the balance requirements in the sport of artistic gymnastics. Additionally, the ability to balance, the species and physiological mechanisms on which it depends as well as the research data on its importance for the performance of athletes and especially in the balance beam were examined. The findings of the research show that balance and the ability to maintain and regain balance, both in basic positions and postures, as well as in the unusual dynamic movements of the sport, is an important parameter for both the general and special preparation of athletes, as well as the avoid injuries and falls. The analysis of the games shows that at a high level, 42-59% of the judges' reductions, concern the balance errors. In conclusion, balance should be developed as a key competence for the performance of artistic gymnastics athletes.
