Review of the implementation and efficacy of teleophthalmology in Greece, Europe and the World
Summary:
Health Informatics has for many decades sought to lay new paths for the upgrading of health care, through its implementation on various disciplines. Telemedicine is one of these paths, searching for much needed answers to the continuously growing needs, as these are emerging from a social, economic and technological context that is constantly changing. Teleophthalmology is the application of telemedicine on the ophthalmological field, trying to handle and cover for needs and voids in everyday practice. This thesis aims to thoroughly describe the various applications of teleophthalmology around the world, beginning from the very first experimental trials up to date, the days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This has been achieved via an extensive search in the bibliographic databases ICI Web of Science, Cinahl, Cochrane and Pubmed. The results have been presented in order of disease and by geographic region.
In conlusion, objective parameters that either assist or impede the implementation of such programs have been addressed, as well as economic and legal matters, and the future directions of the method.
