Special Court of Collaborators of Chalkida 1945-1949: Anatomy of pre-investigation councils
Summary:
The Special Court of Collaborators of Chalkida which functioned from 1945-1949 as part of a nationwide network of courts established by the Editorial Act 6/1945 to examine the complaints unleashed against the Greeks collaborating with the German, Italian and Bulgarian rulers. Numerous cases went through the Departments of these courts in an attempt that started as a purge of the national body from the collaborators but ended in their mass acquittal.

The work, taking into account the studies that have been done so far for the local Special Courts of collaborators, adds to this research another piece concerning the Court of Chalkida, based on the 713 pre- investigation councils issued by the judicial council. It also tries to understand the impact of these developments on court decisions, following the historical developments of the period stigmatized by the Civil War between the communists and the bourgeois state. Moreover, it proceeds to a quantitative study of the material while interpreting the judges’ decisions which become more and more political as the Civil War is generalized.

Last but not least, it is a small contribution to the local history of Evia of the 1940s, the evolution/ expansion of collaborators on the island and its post-war course.
