Investigating the experiences of patients with cardiovascular disease from hospitalisation to improve the quality of care provided
Summary:
Introduction: This is a prospective, multicenter non-invasive observational study of 217 patients who suffered a stroke for the first time. The project is an attempt to assess and evaluate the experiences of patients with cardiovascular disease and stroke as a means of improving the quality of inpatient care provided.

Object / Purpose: The object of the work is to investigate and evaluate the experiences of patients with stroke from their inpatient care and the impact of care provided by medical and nursing staff to improve the quality of care provided.

Method: This is an observational study of 120 patients who suffered an acute stroke for the first time (vascular and ischemic) (ICD-10 codes: I61, I63 and I64) and were admitted within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms in eight (8 ) Public Hospitals of the country in which the study is conducted. All patients were monitored for their health needs after discharge from the hospital, the socio-economic consequences of the disease, the use of health services (medication, rehabilitation, frequency of regular visits to hospitals / doctors) and the loss of productivity . The NHS-Stroke Questionnaire was used to gather the required information on quality of life determinants and the answers were collected by telephone based on the contact details they had given when declaring their participation in the research.

Results: The results of the study are particularly encouraging for the quality of inpatient care provided to patients with cardiovascular disease. Regarding the overall satisfaction of the patients from their in-hospital care, the participants were quite satisfied with the care they received. The largest percentage of patients answered that they would evaluate the care they received from the hospital as excellent (26.3%), very good (35.5%), good (31.8%) while in a rather small percentage they evaluated the experience from moderate (5.1%) to poor (0.5%).
Regarding the adequacy of the staff, there is a lower degree of satisfaction which is presented as a numerical lack of nursing staff as only 36.9% answered that, in their opinion, there was always or almost always sufficient nursing staff.

Conclusions: Based on the above results regarding the adequacy of the staff, it appears that the concern of the state is the staffing of hospitals with sufficient nursing staff in order for the care to be as individualized as possible but also specialized by trained and qualified staff. In conclusion, it seems that the provision of high quality inpatient care for the treatment of stroke is a powerful measure that has a positive effect on the evaluation of the patient's experience.
