Lagrangian study of the dynamics and circulation structures of the Mediterranean with synthetic drifters
Summary:
We study the surface circulation of the Mediterranean and its sub-basins and its seasonal variability from a lagrangian viewpoint. We use data from a high-resolution primitive equation NEMO model. We use the surface velocity fields and the Parcels package to conduct a series of synthetic drifter experiments. We use several metrics based on the relative distance of drifter pairs. We calculate finite strain and detect the lagrangian structures of the flow from the maxima of its spatial distribution. These structures determine transport and mixing processes by attracting and repelling nearby water masses and acting as mixing barriers. Based on the observed structures we characterize areas as strongly or poorly mixed, as well as the seasonal variability of these areas. Additionally, we calculate the relative dispersion and the finite scale Lyapunov exponent, which connect the dispersion of drifters to the energy spectrum of the flow. The energy spectrum determines the distribution of energy among the spatial scales of the flow and consequently the types of structures that can emerge in each of them. Using these metrics we investigate the dynamical regimes in the spatial scales of the Mediterranean circulation and connect them to their physical causes.
