THE ILLUSTRATION OF THE OLD AND NEW CATHOLIC OF THE MONASTERY OF KALAMI ARKADIA (1705-1713) AND THE SIGNED WORK OF THE PEDIOTES PAINTERS PETROS AND MICHAEL.
Summary:
The monastery of Kalami, Arcadia is located on the west bank of the gorge of the river Lousios, a short distance from the ancient Gortyna and near the town of Karytaena. The construction and decoration of the New catholikon (1713), as well as the newer layer of the decoration of the Old catholikon (1703) are historically included in the second occupation by the Venetian Empire in the Peloponnese. The founding inscriptions of the two catholika inform us about the time of decoration, the sponsor and the Cretan painters Petros and Michael Pediotes.
The iconographic programs of the two catholika include a number of iconographic circles, both from the New and the Old Testament with emphasis on the rare circle of the prophet Jeremiah. Several Mother of God Hymns are also illustrated, since the monastery is honored in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The iconographic patterns of the painters are drawn from many sources, but mainly from the works of the post-Byzantine painters of the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as from the Flemish copperplates.
The study of the illustration of both the catholika of the monastery of Kalami, as well as the other signed works of the Pediotes in the Peloponnese, proved that their stigma in late post-Byzantine painting is a milestone in ecclesiastical art shortly before the transition to 18th century folk painting.
