Observations in Cypriot Roman Sculpture
Summary:
The purpose of this essay is to study the marble and metal sculptures which were found in Cyprus and were made during the Roman period (31 B.C. – fourth c. A.D.). Although the enclosure of all the statues was not possible, there was an effort to give a general aspect for the roman sculpture finds in Cyprus. Concerning the sculptures from the inland and the sculptures from Cyprus's coastal sides, some remarks are also made.
The majority of the material that consists of this survey was until today only partly explored and divided into many other older publications. A lot of effort was given to date as precisely as possible the included sculptures, for which only general chronological estimates were given.
The examined sculptures are distributed in this essay, according to the place where they were found. As for these places and the whole of Cyprus, some geographical and historical information is written at the beginning of the chapters and at the beginning of the survey. Sculptures with unknown or uncertain provenance are analyzed in a different chapter. A short reference about the characteristics of the Cypriot sculpture is also made (material, general characteristics, specific features, influences, previous surveys).
