Sins, illegalities, diversions and crimes of women in Byzantium from the 6th to the 9th century
Summary:
In the present dissertation the issue of female delinquent behavior during the Byzantine era- specifically from the 6th to the 9th century- was examined. In the light of the legislative work of this period and the moral restrictions set by the ecclesiastical fathers, in specific seven chapters, specific illegal deviations of women from all walks of life in the Byzantine society are analyzed. The first chapter examines the life of the Byzantine prostitute and her social exclusion. Afterwards, sexual sins are listed and commented on with emphasis being placed on the sin of adultery and incest. The planning of conspiracy and the attempt to exterminate the Byzantine emperor are examined in the 3rd chapter while the Byzantine involvement with magic and its effects on the health of everyday man is summarized in the fourth chapter. In brief, what is described is the presence of the woman in the public sphere and the limits she exceeded in order to participate in it. Finally, the action of the emperor's wife or his mother in the exercise of power either during his lifetime or after his death is analyzed.
