Abdera and Phanagoria: An early tale of two cities.
Summary:
Abdera and Phanagoria, in Thrace and the Asian Bosporus respectively, are two colonies associated with the forced migration of the population of Teos during the Persian siege of the city around 545 BC. Abdera was founded in 654 BC first as a colony from Klazomenai and became the refuge of Teians, while Phanagoria was founded ab initio by the refugees of Teos. Regarding the case of Abdera, the close links of the city with Teos, as well as its founding period, are easily understood by the rich literaly, epigraphic and monetary data. Contrariwise, as far as the case of distant Phanagoria is concerned, ancient writers are rather sparing when they speak of its founding, while its relations with Teos are even more difficult to detect.
The aim of this Master Thesis is to examine the early life of the two colonies. As a result, the paper focuses on the Archaic Period of the two cities, although, when necessary, references are made to later times. At the same time, the paper attempts to compare the two cities during their founding and early period and consequently attempts a detailed analysis on their relations with their metropolis. For the multifaceted approach of the two cities, the literally and epigraphic sources are harnessed, as well as the new along with the old findings of the archeological research in Abdera and Phanagoria, in an effort to combine Greek and Russian bibliography efficaciously. Hence, all aspects of the formation and early life of the two cities are taken into account.
The paper consists of three parts. The first part concerns Abdera and the second part Phanagoria. Both parts are of the same structure. Chapter 1 presents the introductory data of the two cities (geographical location, environmental conditions, topography and history of the research), Chapter 2 their historical overview (founding conditions, founding myths, cults of settlers, relations with the local peoples, historical development and the stance of the two cities in the turbulent political development of the Archaic Period), Chapter 3 is to focus on the evolution of the city (fortifications, public and private buildings), Chapter 4 on the cults, Chapter 5 is to explore numismatics and Chapter 6 the pottery. The third and final part presents the conclusions.
