Myths of Greek and Roman literature and their utilization in Gaspara Stampa’s work
Summary:
This dissertation discusses certain myths of ancient Greek and Latin literature, and how they have been used by Gaspara Stampa in her oeuvre. Gaspara Stampa was one of the most important poets of Renaissance Italy, and one of the most characteristic features of her Canzoniere is the fact that she mentioned and used a variety of myths, just like Ovidius used to do. Gaspara draws linguistic and stylistic elements from Ovidius and “copies” thematic innovations from him. Six myths are closely examined and the dissertation focuses on identifying and highlighting how Ovidius affected Gaspara.
