Risk and protective factors for the mental health of refugee children and adolescents: A review
Summary:
Background: In recent years, millions of children and adolescents have been forced to flee
their country of origin due to violence, seeking better living conditions. Displaced children are
particularly vulnerable to developing mental health problems.
Aim: The aim of this dissertation is to highlight the factors that contribute protectively or as
risk factors to the mental health of refugee children and adolescents at various socio-economic
levels in terms of the individual, the family and the community.
Method: For the elaboration of this dissertation, a literature review was carried out, during
which surveys from 2015 until today were selected. Previously published articles have been
used as part of a historical review.
Results: Refugees before the migration process is exposed to traumatic events, while women
are more vulnerable. Post-migration factors that seem to negatively affect the individual are
the mental health of the parents, the long wait in the host country and the stress associated with
integration. In contrast, the community, the school, socializing with minors and
superculturalism work to protect the mental health of children and adolescents.
Conclusion: Promotion and intervention approaches need to integrate factors at different social
levels. More long-term studies are needed, especially in low- and middle-income countries, to
promote knowledge of the causal mechanisms behind factors contributing to the mental health
of young refugees. It would be beneficial to develop targeted interventions that enhance
protective factors and therefore reduce risk factors.
