Aspects of interart relations in modern Greek Aestheticism: N. Kazantzakis between Pre-Raphaelitism and Impressionism
Summary:
The aim of this thesis has been to explore the relationship between the literary movement of modern Greek Aestheticism (1893-1912) and the European artistic movements of Pre-Raphaelitism and Impressionism through the example of N. Kazantzakis’ early works, as to demonstrate the “fusion” between the literary and the artistic discourse, a key element of Greek Aestheticism. Some aspects of the "intersections" between the literary and artistic texts have been examined as the product of the influence of the European movements on Greek Aestheticism, whereas some others as simple analogies. The thesis consists of two chapters: the first one focuses on the history of the artistic Movements and the second one on the use of techniques and themes –derived from the artistic works– in the literary works of N. Kazantzakis.
